BOONE, N.C. – The Troy Trojans men's basketball program continues a three-game road trip Saturday afternoon (3 p.m. CT) at Appalachian State.
A Troy victory would be the program's first victory in Boone in school history and would keep Troy's Sun Belt Conference Tournament hopes alive.
The Trojans, who currently sit a game and a half behind Louisiana for the 10th and final playoff spot can be eliminated from postseason play with a loss and victories by Arkansas State (vs. Little Rock), Coastal Carolina (South Alabama) and Louisiana (at ULM).
Troy returns to action next Saturday night at in-state rival South Alabama. Tip-off from the Mitchell Center is set for 6 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT- (Troy- 9-19, 5-12 Sun Belt)
The Troy Trojans look to stay in the race for the 10th and final spot in next month's Sun Belt Conference Tournament on Saturday afternoon. A victory on Saturday in Boone would be the program's first-ever victory at App State and would snap a four-game losing streak that began two weeks ago against South Alabama. On Thursday night, the Trojans got off to a strong start, taking an early 6-4 lead on a pair of 3-pointers from Nick Stampley. After an 8-2 run gave the home Chanticleers a 12-8 lead with 15:34 remaining, Tahj Small nailed one of his three triples to cut the Trojan deficit to 12-11. After Coastal scored the next three points of the game, Troy used an ally-oop dunk by Davion Thomas and a Ty Gordon jumper to tie the game at 15 with 10:35 left in the half. Over the final 10 minutes of the half, the Trojans were outscored 35-11, as Coastal Carolina took a 40-26 lead into the break at halftime. After the Chants opened a 54-31 lead with 16:24 remaining, the Trojans answered with a quick 7-0, cutting the CCU lead to 56-39. The home Chanticleers quickly answered with one last 16-7 run to put the game away for good. In the contest, CCU outscored Troy 50-18 in the paint and limited the Trojans to just 8-of-33 shooting from 3-point range.
LAST TIME OUT- (App State, 15-13, 9-8 Sun Belt)
Winners of five-of-eight, the Appalachian State Mountaineers enter Saturday's contest in tie for sixth place with Georgia Southern in the crowded Sun Belt Conference standings. On Thursday night, the Mountaineers dropped a tough 78-70 decision to South Alabama at the Holmes Center, despite a career-high 10 3-pointers from O'Showen Williams. Williams' 10 3-point field goals tie the App State single-game school record. After App State took an early 6-3 advantage the visiting Jaguars scored 17 of the next 27 points to take a 23-13 lead. App State would answer with a 9-1 run that cut the South lead to just 24-22 before South made it 30-22. The Mountaineers cut the South advantage to just 34-33, but an Andre Fox 3-pointer before the buzzer gave South a 37-33 lead heading into the break. In the second half, South Alabama used a 27-14 stretch to take a 64-47 lead with 7:26 left. The Mountaineers did cut the South Alabama lead to 69-60 with two minutes to go, but ultimately the home side was unable to pull any closer.
