Notes: Trojans Battle to Retain Sole Possession of First-Place Thursday at Coastal

TROY, Ala. – The Troy women's basketball team is back on the road for another marquee match-up in the Sun Belt Conference, this time at Coastal Carolina. The Trojans and Chanticleers will do battle at 5 p.m. (CT) in the HTC Center with first-place on the line for both teams.

The Trojans will be in another battle for the top spot in the Sun Belt on Thursday. With a win over Coastal, Troy will retain sole possession of first-place and have a two-game lead over both CCU and Little Rock, who Troy still has to play twice. This will be the second meeting of the season between the two programs with Troy coming out on top back on Jan. 2 by a score of 84-77. In the first meeting Troy enjoyed a comfortable 24-point lead midway through the third-quarter before Coastal Carolina cut it down to just 4-points with just over 30 seconds to play. Troy was able to hold Coastal and earn its first Sun Belt win of the season in conference opener.

Coastal Carolina enters Thursday with an identical record to Troy at 19-3. CCU is 9-2 in the SBC with their only losses coming at Troy and at Arkansas State on a buzzer beater. There is a lot riding on Thursday's outcome for Coastal Carolina. With a win they will move into a tie for first-place with Troy and have one of the easiest schedules to close out out the year. Following Thursday, Coastal Carolina's opponents will have a combined record of 48-85. Coastal Carolina has been almost unbeatable at home this season. In home games CCU is averaging 79.4 ppg and allowing just 55.3 while on the road they are averaging 71.2 ppg and allowing 59.0. Coastal Carolina has already improved its overall record by two games and its SBC record by a game from last year. Last season they finished 17-15 overall and 8-10 in conference. Coastal is led offensively by DJ Williams who is averaging 17.2 points per game and 7.0 rebounds per game. In our first meeting with CCU, Williams scored a game-high 21-points and hauled in eight rebounds. Only two players (Williams and Aja Blount) are averaging double-digit points this season. In our first meeting CCU had four players reach double-figures.

• On the road this season Troy has posted a 7-2 overall record and a 4-0 SBC road record. In road games they are averaging 76.4 points per game while allowing 72.7. Troy is averaging 7.1 ppg less on the road than at home while allowing 10.7 more ppg
• In the last three meetings against Coastal Carolina Troy has outscored CCU 255-165. In 4 of the 6 meetings Troy has scored at least 80-points. When the game is played in Conway, S.C. Troy has been outscored 153-165 and is 1-1 in those games
• A big part of Troy's success this season has been its improved defense. Troy is currently ranked 4th in the conference in scoring defense at 65.3 ppg. It's the first time under coach Rigby that Troy is allowing less than 70 ppg
