TROY, Ala. – Troy men's basketball will face No. 17 Texas Tech Friday night at United Supermarkets Arena in Lubbock, Texas, Troy Athletics announced Wednesday morning. The 8 PM matchup will be televised live on ESPN2.
"One of my close friends who was on my staff is Ulric Maligi, who is on their staff," head coach Scott Cross said. "He probably saw on Twitter that our game against Wake Forest got canceled, and their game against St. John's got canceled too. We both had an opening so it was a perfect match."
"They asked if we were interested and obviously we were because you cannot pass up the opportunity to play a team like Texas Tech on national TV. We just had to get the details worked out and all the COVID-19 protocols were worked out and in place. Once we got all that in place we were able to get that done. So I'm very thankful to coach Beard and his staff for being so generous and working with us. It's a great opportunity for our guys to play against one of the best teams in the country on national TV."
Friday's matchup against the Red Raiders (3-1) marks the sixth consecutive season that Troy (1-1) will play a nationally-televised game and will replace the Trojans' originally scheduled matchup against Wake Forest (Dec. 2) that was canceled due to COVID-19 concerns inside the Wake Forest program.
"I appreciate Texas Tech Athletics and their men's basketball program working extremely quickly with us to secure this game after our basketball game vs. Wake Forest was canceled earlier this week," Director of Athletics Brent Jones said. "This is a great opportunity for our basketball program to compete against a nationally ranked team and to be featured on ESPN2."
Following the game against Texas Tech, Troy will continue its longest road trip of the season Sunday afternoon at UAB. Tip-off from Bartow Arena is set for 2 p.m.
