Trojans Open the Season at Mako Medical Asheville Classic

TROY, Ala. -- The Troy Trojans men's basketball program opens the 2020-21 season this Friday and Saturday afternoon against Western Carolina and UNCW at the Mako Medical Asheville Classic hosted by UNC-Asheville.
The Multi-Team Event (MTE) tournament features four games in two days, as the host Bulldogs will face UNCW Friday afternoon (Noon CT) and Western Carolina (Noon CT) on Saturday.
Following the two games up in Asheville, the Trojans will stay in the Tar Heel State and prepare for a matchup at Wake Forest (Dec. 2).
Tipoff from Winston-Salem is set for 3 p.m. Central.

The Trojans were originally slated to host Middle Georgia State for the season-opener Wednesday afternoon, but due to COVID-19 concerns inside the Knights program, the game was canceled. Featuring a roster with 11 newcomers and eight true freshman, coach Scott Cross and his staff have signed the best recruiting class in school history. Featuring the first four-star signee in school history and two Alabama Sports Writers Super Five selections, the class also features three JUCO signees as well including former Tyler JC teammates (Kieffer Punter, Rory Pantophlet).
LAST TIME OUT- (Western Carolina- 1-0)
The Catamounts opened the 2020-21 season with a convincing 98-76 victory over UNCW Wednesday afternoon. In that contest sophomore Xavier Cork scored a career-best 22 points while senior Matt Halvorsen added 20. After a close back-and-forth first half that saw the Catamounts take a 44-40 at the break. Following a quick 7-2 run over the first 98 second of the period, UNCW used a dunk from Imajee Dodd to cut the Catamounts lead to just 55-52. Needing to seize control of the contest, WCU used a game-changing 25-3 run to take a commanding 80-55 lead with 5:16 to play. For the contest WCU shot 56.3 percent (36-for-64) and shot almost 65 percent in the second half. The Catamounts return three starters and nine total players from a team that went 19-12 and was projexcted to finish sixth in the Southern Conference
LAST TIME OUT- UNCW (0-1)
The Seahawks of UNCW continue action in the Mako Medicial Asheville Classic Friday afternoon against UNC-Asheville. Coming off a tough 98-76 defeat to Western Carolina, UNCW will look to notch the first win of the Takayo Siddel Era who hired back in March. Colonial Athletic Association honorable mention selection Jaylen Sims led the way for the Seahawks, tallying 27 points. Sims hit 13-of-18 from the charity stripe. In the preseason CAA poll, UNCW was projected to finish eighth in the 10-team CAA.

TAKE TWO
After seeing Wednesday's season-opener against Middle Georgia State canceled, Troy's long awaited opener will be Friday's matchup against the Catamounts.
ROAD WARRIORS
Troy will open the 2020-21 campaign with five straight road matchups. Troy's home opener will be Dec. 16th's matchup against Samford.
MTE MADNESS
Troy will hit the road for the Mako Medical Asheville Classic hosted by
UNC-Ashville. In the two-day tournament Troy will face Western Carolina (Nov. 27) and UNCW (Nov. 28) at Noon central.
TAR-TREK
Troy will play five games in the state of North Carolina this season. Following the three days at the Mako Medical Asheville Classic, Troy will hit I-40 for the short trip to Winston-Salem. Following the matchup at Wake (Dec. 2), Troy will return to the Tar Heel state for a pair of games at App State (Jan. 1-2).
DEFENSE LED To WINS
The Trojans were 7-1 last season when they held teams to 65 points or fewer. Troy's lone loss when holding a team below that mark was at Texas A&M (56-52, loss). The Trojans were also 8-1 last season when holding an opponent to less than 40 percent shooting.
TAKE ONE!
Troy drew 80 total charges in 31 games last season. Rising senior Nick Stampley led the way for the Trojans taking a team-best 32 charges. Stampley drew 40 percent of Troy's charges in 2019-20.
