Halldorsdottir's Strike Not Enough as Troy Falls to Georgia Southern

TROY, Ala. -- Despite a 31st-minute strike from freshman Regielly Halldorsdottir, and a furious second half comeback, the Troy soccer program fell 2-1 to the Georgia Southern Eagles Sunday afternoon at the Troy Soccer Complex.
With the loss, the Trojans (0-4-1, 0-4-1 Sun Belt Conference) saw their nine-match home winning streak snapped and their six-match Sun Belt Conference unbeaten streak snapped.
Sunday, Troy recorded a season-best 11 corner kicks, while freshman Lindsey LaRoche made seven saves.
The Trojans started quickly Sunday afternoon, earning the first scoring opportunity of the match when they were awarded a corner kick in the sixth minute. On the ensuing service, the ball bounced to Mia Tessier, but her dangerous shot was blocked.
A costly turnover nearly nine minutes later hurt the Trojans, as Marcela Montoya was able to gather the rebound from her original shot that was saved by LaRoche. After gathering the rebound, Montoya calmly slotted a left-footed shot into the back of the net.
After four Trojan corners resulted in just one Halldorsdottir shot, the Eagles (1-5, 1-3 Sun Belt Conference) were able to double their lead when Simone Timm lifted a shot from 35-yards out that found the back of the net.
Down a pair of goals at home for the first time since Oct. 14, 2018, the Trojans responded just three minutes later, when Halldorsdottir slotted home a free kick from 20-yards out for her first career goal. The free kick was awarded to Troy after Taytum Terrell was dragged to the ground by Sade Heinrichs resulting in the first of two Georgia Southern yellow cards.
In the 37th minute, the Trojans had another strong scoring chance thwarted when Erin Bloomfield was flung to the ground by Georgia Southern's Taylor Regensburger. The foul and ensuing yellow card proved to be a pivotal play in the game, as Bloomfield would have had a clear one-versus-one opportunity with the Eagles keeper. Troy was awarded a free-kick but was unable to muster a scoring opportunity.
Neither the Trojans nor Eagles had a strong chance over the final eight minutes of the half, as the match headed to the half with the visitors up by a goal.
In the second period, Troy had two really strong opportunities to score, but both Melissa Kuya-Strobel's 70th-minute shot and Alisa Detlefsen's 83rd-minute shot were saved by Sara Story. For the match, Story made four saves to earn her first career victory.
The Trojans return to action next Sunday afternoon when South Alabama visits the Troy Soccer Complex. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m.
GED TALKS:
"Every opportunity to play is a learning experience. I hope the players who played today are able to be introspective and learn from today's result. We tried a couple of different formations and unfortunately it didn't work all that well. I need to go and have a look at the film to get a better sense of what we did and did not do well. It's a bitterly disappointing way to end our home unbeaten streak, because I don't feel as though we gave 100 percent of our best effort for the full 90-minutes. That's the challenge with having kids who are learning as they play. But we have great kids who will keep learning. I thought Regielly's goal was a beautiful strike, but we still have yet to score from 'open-play' this season. So, we need to find a way to change that, and quickly."
