TROY, Ala. – The Troy Trojans men's basketball program closes out the month of January this weekend, heading to Georgia Southern Thursday (6 PM CT), and Georgia State on Saturday afternoon (1 PM CT).
Both of this weekend's matchups are rematch games for the Trojans. Troy dropped a tough 82-66 decision to Georgia Southern two weeks ago (Jan. 16), before rebounding nicely for a 75-65 victory over Georgia Southern.
Following the two contests in Georgia this weekend, Troy will return home for a three-game homestand beginning next Friday (Feb. 7) when rival South Alabama visits Trojan Arena for a nationally televised 8 p.m. matchup.
LAST TIME OUT- (Troy- 8-14, 4-7 Sun Belt)
The Troy Trojans hit the road this weekend looking to snap a two-game losing streak. Last Wednesday night (Jan. 22) Troy fell 81-63 at first-place Little Rock. In that game, the Trojans headed to the locker room down just 37-34, but the Little Rock Trojans outscored Troy 44-29 in the second half. Junior Ty Gordon recorded 14 points (all in the second half) despite battling foul trouble for most of the game. On Saturday, Troy dropped a 78-62 matchup against Arkansas State. In that game, Troy shot just 7-of-25 (28 percent) in the first half and was outscored 37-25. The Trojans kept battling, cutting the Arkansas State lead to 12 points on multiple occasions, but the Red Wolves 27 made field goals and 52 percent shooting from the field was too much for Troy to overcome. In the matchup, junior Khalyl Waters turned in a career performance, scoring 15 points on 4-of-7 shooting. Waters made all seven of his free-throw attempts and added four rebounds in his 22 minutes of action. Gordon scored 14 points once again, while Tahj Small added 11 points on 3-of-5 shooting. Small's 11-point performance was his third in the last five games for Troy.
LAST TIME OUT- (Georgia Southern, 12-9, 6-4 Sun Belt)
The Georgia Southern Eagles enter Thursday's matchup also looking to snap a two-game losing streak. After defeating Troy back on Jan. 16, the Eagles fell at South Alabama 74-68. Last week Georgia Southern played just once, hosting in-state rival Georgia Southern last Saturday afternoon at Hanner Fieldhouse. In that contest, Georgia State trailed by 14 points with 12:58 remaining, but the Panthers outscored the Eagles 21-6 to take a 72-71 advantage. Over that span, Georgia Southern committed seven turnovers and missed four consecutive foul shots. The Eagles responded to take a 76-74 lead with 2:32 remaining, but the Eagles were held to just one Ike Smith free throw the rest of the way, as GSU outscored Southern 8-1 over that span. In the game, Smith scored a game-high 23 points but shot just 4-of-8 from the charity stripe. The Eagles shot just 26.9 percent (7-of-26) from behind the arc and just 39.3 (24-of-61) from the field. Georgia Southern is the third highest-scoring team in the Sun Belt (76.0 points) and has the third-best scoring margin (4.6) in the conference. The Eagles have the worst rebounding margin (-2.8) in the conference thus far and have recorded just 12.5 assists a game. One of the most balanced teams in the SBC, five different Eagles are currently averaging double-figures led by Smith (14.5 points, 5.6 rebounds) and Isaiah Crawley (13.2, 5.4 rebounds). In the matchup at Trojan Arena, Crawley scored 24 points (10-of-14 shooting) and grabbed 10 rebounds, while Quan Jackson scored 19 points. The Eagles shot 55.6 percent from the floor in the first half and 53.6 percent for the contest.
