TROY, Ala. – The Troy track and field team returns to action for its third indoor meet of the year Sunday at the KMS Invite in Birmingham. The meet is scheduled to run all day at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
"We are starting to get to a very crucial part of the season," director Marc Davis said. "Now is the time when we are looking for performances to get closer to championship levels. This week is simple. Race, compete, advance and rest a week. We need some people to really step up this week so we can have some momentum moving forward."
What: KMS Invite
Where: Birmingham CrossPlex
When: Sunday, Jan. 26 – All Day
Admission: Adults, $5; Kids under 12, $3
The Trojans have made sold improvements each week this season and will look to take another step up Sunday. Troy crowned four event champions last weekend at the Samford Invitational after having two at the Vulcan Invite two weekends ago.
Michael Alvernaz led the Trojans by winning his second men's weight throw crown in as many weekends with a toss of 20.20m. The senior was tabbed the Sun Belt's men's field athlete of the week for his efforts.
Other Trojans to finish first last weekend included Tanner Guest, who was the first runner across the finish line in the women's mile, going the distance in 5:02.56. Gemma Finch claimed the top spot in the women's 800m with a time of 2:15.75 while the Troy women's 1600m relay ended the day on a strong note with a win in a time of 3:49.08.
Macki Walsh is a constant threat for a top spot in the women's distance races. The junior placed first in the 3000m at the Vulcan invitational with a school record time of 10:05.10 seconds. Walsh back that up the next weekend with a 17:48.64 second-place finish in the 5000m.
Matthew Likely and Jasmine Riley each posted solid outings in the 200m dash last weekend. Likely took third on the men's side, finishing in 22.02 seconds while Riley finished fourth in the women's with a time of 24.99 seconds. Riley also competed well in the 60m dash, sprinting to a third-place mark of 7.64 seconds.
