TROY, Ala. – In an impressive 84-50 victory over Texas State on Thursday, Troy women's basketball added another member to its exclusive 1,000-point club as Amber River became the 24th Trojan to score 1,000 points in her career.
Troy was in a groove Thursday night as they shot 45 percent from the field, their highest percentage this season, on 33-of-72 shooting. From behind-the-arc the Trojans shot 34 percent, their highest percentage since Jan. 4 when they shot 38 percent, on 8-of-23 shooting. On the glass Troy had one of their best games of the season as they grabbed 65 rebounds, third most this season, while also outrebounding Texas State by 38, the second largest margin since having a +39 advantage against AUM. At the free line Troy went 10-of-16 with eight of those makes coming from Japonica James.
James had a game to remember for Troy as she recorded her first double-double of the season, third of her career, with 28-points, which tied a career-high, and a season-high 11 rebounds. She nearly recorded the double-double by halftime, coming up just two rebounds short. Alexus Dye also recorded a double-double, her third this season, with 12-points and 16 rebounds. Dye's 16 boards matches a season-high. Tiyah Johnson also recorded double-digit points with 10. Its Johnson's seventh double-digit performance of the season and the fourth time she's done it in conference play. Jasmine Robinson and Amber Rivers added nine and eight points respectively.
Troy's defense was locked in Thursday as they allowed just one Bobcat to reach double-digits, Jayla Johnson who scored 10, while also holding their leading scorer on the year, Da'Nasia Hood, to just three points after averaging 12.8 points per game this season. In the fourth-quarter Troy only allowed two made field goals while holding the Bobcats scoreless for over five minutes.
Needing just four points coming into the game to reach her 1,000th career point, Amber Rivers finally became the 24th member of the exclusive club with 7:04 left in the fourth-quarter on a layup in the paint that increased the Trojan lead to 25. Rivers ended the game with eight points and now has 1,004 career points.
