Men’s Golf Climbs to Sixth on Final Day of Graeme McDowell Invitational

Final Results
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Troy junior Connor Futrell fired a 3-under 69 for the second straight round to lead the Trojans in Tuesday's final round of the Graeme McDowell Invitational at the Greystone Golf & Country Club. Futrell finished in a tie for second place, and Troy finished in a tie for sixth place.
Troy climbed five spots in the final round with a 4-under as a team. It completed a monumental comeback for the Trojans who found themselves in last place and tied for 18th place after the opening round. Troy shaved 10 strokes off its overall team score each round after shooting 16-over par in the first round.
Futrell's second place finish caps an impressive three-week run to open the season. The Tallahassee, Florida native has shot under par in six of his nine rounds and has a 69.67 stroke average on the year. He led the entire field with 17 birdies over the three rounds including six in Tuesday's final round.
After making the turn even for the day, Futrell put the hammer down on the back nine with four birdies and just one bogey to charge into his best finish of the year and pace Troy's comeback.
Jake Tiffin's individual play mirrored Troy's team play for the week with a dramatic turnaround from round one to round three. He dropped four birdies in the final round and shot a 2-under 70 after opening the week with an 8-over 80; Tiffin tied for 52nd place overall.
North Florida held off host-UAB by one shot to win the team title at 14-under par and Arkansas State finished third at 10-under. South Carolina and Memphis rounded out the top five with Troy and Louisiana tying for sixth.
Will McFadden tied Tiffin for 52nd at 9-over for the week after a 1-over 73 on Tuesday, while Ryan Morrison shot even on the day to tie for 58th place and Brent Hamm tied for 64th place following a final round 76.
Following three tournaments in three weeks, Troy will take a week off before playing in the Intercollegiate at The Grove on Oct. 6-8.
