TROY, Ala. – Troy has a storied history of record-setting quarterbacks in its program, but none had ever topped the 500-yard mark through the air in a game. Kaleb Barker changed that Saturday night when he threw for 504 yards and four touchdowns against Southern Miss, and he has been named the Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts, the league office announced Monday.
Barker's total ranks as the second most nationally in a game this season and the fourth most in Sun Belt Conference history. The Decatur, Alabama native was 29-of-43 through the air against the Golden Eagles and completed passes eight different teammates. Barker's previous career high in passing was 282 yards in the season opener against Campbell.
He was able to stretch the field against Southern Miss connecting on nine passes of 20-plus yards with six going for more than 30 yards. Four of his receivers topped the 100-yard mark in the game, which marked the first time in school history that three players had ever crossed the century mark in the same game.
Barker enters the week ranked second in the country averaging 393 yards per game through the air and fourth with 385.5 yards of total offense per game.
Troy travels to Akron this weekend for its first road game of the season. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. (CT) and the game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
