HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Troy men's golf team took out a full-on assault of the school record book at the season opening Sam Hall Intercollegiate, which concluded play Tuesday at the Hattiesburg Country Club. Troy established new benchmarks for individual and team rounds en route to a tie for second in the event.
Connor Futrell, Will McFadden and Jake Tiffin finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively, for the Trojans who finished 23-under par for the tournament. Troy's 829 overall score set a school record by 11 shots and the 23 strokes under par established a new record by six shots.
"I was proud of a lot of what we did in the first round," head coach Bart Barnes said. "We took the lead and showed we were there to win. When we came back out this morning, we started on some tough holes which slowed us down a little bit, and we had a hard time building some momentum. We put together a heck of a round in the afternoon knowing that's what we had to do if we wanted to have a chance to win."
Futrell and McFadden both entered their names in the record book after each carded a 7-under 64 – Futrell in the opening round and McFadden in the third round. Additionally, Troy's 271 team tally in round three goes down as the second-best round in school history and its 273 in Monday's opening round is the fourth best.
Teams played around 30 holes on Tuesday after lightning halted play on Monday. The Trojans had the low tally in both the first and third rounds, but a 1-over in round two allowed Sam Houston State to slide past and claim the team title.
"Our guys didn't back down," Barnes said. "We got it to within five or six at one point, and we just kept coming at them. I learned a lot about what kind of toughness and heart they have. This was a great way to start the fall. That score will win a lot of tournaments and it was a big boost of confidence for us."
Troy finished with 64 birdies over the three rounds led by 16 from McFadden and 15 by Futrell. McFadden carded six birdies and an eagle during his record-setting round on Tuesday and blistered the back nine to the tune of 6-under.
Futrell's final card sat at 11-under following a 5-under 66 in a final round that featured five birdies and nothing above par. Tiffin was the lone Trojan to fire three rounds under par with cards of 4-under, 1-under and 2-under.
Brent Hamm tied for 42ndplace at 5-over par following a 1-over 72 in Tuesday's final round and Ryan Morrison tied for 67that 12-over par. Playing as an individual, Nicklas Borrmann tied for 49thwith a pair of even-par rounds before a 7-over to close out the event.
Troy picked up 13 victories and finished 22 shots ahead of fourth-place New Orleans.
The Trojans won't have much time to reflect as they travel to Ruston, Louisiana over the weekend for the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate, which gets underway on Sunday.
