TROY, Alabama – With seven days of fall camp in the books, the Troy football team will take a major step towards its season opener when the Trojans hold their first scrimmage of the preseason on Saturday on the new turf inside The Vet. The scrimmage has been moved up to an 8:30 a.m. start to beat the Alabama heat.
Saturday's scrimmage will mark the first full speed action for quarterback Kaleb Barker since last October after he missed half of last season due to a knee injury and was held out of team drills in the spring. Additionally, it will be an audition for redshirt freshman Gunnar Watson, sophomore Jacob Free and freshman Gavin Screws who are battling for the backup role.
First-year head coach Chip Lindsey has a nice mix of experience and youth on both sides of the ball, and Saturday will be a "Moving Day" for all battling to define their role on the team.
Following the scrimmage, players and coaches will take part in Troy's annual Media Day inside the Stadium Club of Veterans Memorial Stadium.

"Saturday we are three weeks away from playing and our guys are feeling that. Their attitude was great the last two days. Hopefully tomorrow we get a lot of basic blocking and tackling; that's what we want to see. It's not going to be a lot of trick plays and some funky blitz. We are going to try and play old-school football and see where we are at.
"I want to be clean. I want make sure we get the right people on and off the field, I want to make sure we execute our routes, I want to make sure our quarterbacks are going the right place with the ball. On defense, make sure we don't bust coverages, make sure our guys are in the right gaps. Then we're trying to figure out if any of these newcomers can help us, if any of these young guys that we might need and see where they are at.

"The timing of everything (in the scrimmage) is more full speed than it is in practice and guys are actually tackling to the ground. The speed over everything in the scrimmages is faster so it will be good for the young guys, and for me too, to get back in the rhythm.
"Camp will put a toll on your body, but overall I feel good and I'm ready to go. I'm trying to attack every day and not take one for granted with me being a senior. That's a big deal for me; just coming out here and enjoying every day."
Quotable – Linebacker Carlton Martial
"(The scrimmage) is really good work for our young guys; a good chance for them to feel how the game is going to move."
