TROY, Alabama – Troy senior catcher Chase Smartt has been named to the Collegiate Baseball All-America Third Team powered by Diamond, the prominent magazine announced Thursday.
Â
Smartt becomes the 55th All-American in school history after he posted a .343/.406/.523 slash line with 21 doubles, six home runs and 41 RBIs during the 2019 season. His double total currently ranks as the 22ndmost in the country and will go down as the ninth most in a season in school history.
Â
"Our program benefits when players earn postseason accolades, and I am proud that Chase has been named a Collegiate Baseball All-American," head coach Mark Smartt said of his son. "He becomes the 55th player in history to earn All-America status and the 17th player since joining the Sun Belt in 2006. He joins an outstanding group of players who have earned All-America honors at Troy. Chase had a solid senior season but played exceptionally well in the last six weeks. It is definitely a great way to end his career at Troy."
Â
Smartt walked more times (25) than he struck out (22) and finished the year as the toughest player in the Sun Belt Conference to strikeout – just once every 9.8 at-bats.Â
Â
The Troy native put together one of the best final two months in the country at the plate. Smartt posted a .415 batting average with 14 doubles, all six of his home runs and 23 RBIs in the final 23 games of the season. He was named the National Hitter of the Week during that stretch and had multiple hits in 12 games and multiple RBIs seven times.Â
Â
The Trojan backstop was also one of the best defensive catchers in the country as he allowed just two passed balls and threw out 44 percent (23-of-52) potential base stealers this season and 40 percent in his career.Â
Â
Smartt finished his career as Troy's all-time leader with 222 career games played and 18 career sacrifice flies in addition to ranking fourth with 47 career doubles and fifth with 214 career hits.
