Texas State Salvages Finale Over Troy in Extras

SAN MARCOS – John Wuthrich singled through the left side of the infield to score Travon Benton with two outs in the bottom of the tenth to give Texas State an 8-7 victory over Troy in the Sun Belt series finale at Bobcat Ballpark Sunday afternoon.

Benton walked to lead off the frame, made it to second on a sac bunt, advanced to third on a wild pitch then scored a batter later as Wuthrich placed one between shortstop and third to win it for the Bobcats (20-12, 7-5).

Troy (16-15, 5-7) had opportunities to take the lead late, but the bounces went in favor of Texas State. With a runner in scoring position in the ninth, Chase Smartt ripped one right back up the middle but right at the center fielder to end the threat. Smartt led the Trojans with three hits in the game and drove in a run.

The Trojans were knocking on the door once again in the tenth, as Rigsby Mosley stepped to the plate with a runner at second and laced a single into center – but the center fielder was able to play it on a hop to prevent the go-ahead run from scoring. The Bobcats then scored their run in the bottom half off Sadler Goodwin (2-4), who was saddled with the loss after giving up one run on four hits in four innings of relief.

The two squads went back and forth early, as Troy struck for three in the first inning and Texas State responded to score seven unanswered to take a four-run lead after three full innings.

Texas State's big, five-run third inning was split up around a nearly 17-hour weather delay that suspended the game from 7:37 Saturday night until 12:31 Sunday afternoon. The Bobcats scored two before the break and blasted a three-run homer in the first at-bat Sunday to go up 7-3.

Freshman Logan Cerny brought Troy right back into it with a three-run homer with two outs in the top of the fifth – his fourth homer of the season. Then the Trojans knotted things up with a bases-loaded walk in the top of the sixth, where it remained tied until the tenth. Troy still took the series over Texas State after sweeping a doubleheader Friday.

Not at all, though, in the way that the loss came. We fought, hung in there, battled and scratched but couldn't ever get the lead and that's baseball."

Sunday's one-run, last-at-bat loss marks back-to-back series where the Trojans took both of the first two games of the set, before dropping the finale by a single run. Last weekend Troy fell, 4-3, at Riddle-Pace Field to Louisiana on a ninth-inning RBI base hit.

Notable
• With two walks and a single in the game, Troy's Rigsby Mosley once again extended his career- and team-best reached base streak – now reaching safely in 22 straight contests.

• With the three-run homer and a sacrifice fly, freshman Logan Cerny recorded his second four-RBI game of the season in the finale – he is second on the team with six multi-RBI games.

• The loss snapped a seven-game winning streak over Texas State for Troy, dating back to the 2016 season. The Trojans have still won 12 of the last 15 over the Bobcats.

Troy will return to Riddle-Pace Field for a pair of midweek contests against in-state foes this week. The Trojans will welcome UAB on Tuesday night and Alabama State Wednesday for Dollar Night.
