TROY, Alabama – Troy head coach Chanda Rigby announced the signing of NJCAA First Team All-American guard Tiyah Johnson on Friday, the second All-American to sign with the Trojans in the 2019 class.
Â
"Not only is she a very talented basketball player, but she's a very good student," Troy head coach Chanda Rigby said. "It's special to sign an All-American from such a close proximity to Troy. She is as serious about academics as she is about winning championship, which makes her an instant leader for our program."
Â
Johnson, a 6-foot guard from Phenix City, Ala., led Shelton State Community College to a 29-4 campaign during her sophomore season. She averaged 18.1 points in 24.5 minutes per game. Johnson scored in double figures in 28 of 33 games and posted 20 or more points 16 times, including a season-high 31 points against Gadsden State. She finished the year shooting 41.8 percent (94-225) from three-point range to compliment 3.3 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game.
Â
Johnson (first name pronounced tea-yah) joins Alexus Dye and Tyasia Moore in the Trojans' talented signing class. Dye, a 6-foot-1 forward, was an NJCAA Second Team All-American and the MVP of the national championship tournament. Moore, a 6-foot forward, led Trinity Valley to the NJCAA national championship game in 2018.
Â
A 42 percent career shooter in junior college, Johnson was a standout at Central High School in Phenix City earning Alabama Sports Writers Association All-State honors after leading the Red Devils to a Class 7A Final Four appearance her senior year in 2017. Tiyah and her sister Teyah combined to score 54 points in the AHSAA Central Regional win over Lee-Montgomery.
Â
Last season, Johnson guided Shelton State to a No. 7 national ranking and its fourth-straight Alabama Community College Conference championship. Johnson scored 20 points in the ACCC title game helping Shelton State clinch the automatic bid to the national tournament.Â
Â
Johnson is also a star in the classroom earning her way onto the Shelton State Dean's List.
