Troy Set for Skirmish with Appalachian State

TROY, Alabama – Troy hosts Appalachian State in what could be a pivotal weekend across the Sun Belt Conference. First pitch at Riddle-Pace Field is set for Thursday at 5 p.m., Friday at 6 p.m., and Saturday at 1 p.m.; note that Friday's game has been moved to 5 p.m.

The Trojans (19-18, 7-8 SBC) can jump in the East Division with a strong showing. Appalachian State leads Troy for third by just a half game, while division leaders Coastal Carolina host second-place Georgia Southern. The four teams are separated by just a game and a half.

Troy has won nine of its last 14 games and four of its last seven at home, though the team's last two league series have been played on the road.

Continuing his solid campaign, Sadler Goodwin is second in the conference with 38 runs batted in and 10thwith a .556 slugging percentage. Goodwin has an RBI in six of his last eight games and has driven in three or more runs seven times this season.

On the mound, head coach Mark Smartt will send a trio of right-handers to the bump. Levi Thomas will take the ball for Thursday's series opener followed by Cory Gill on Friday and Goodwin on Saturday. Gill has been good in his last three outings combining to toss 18.2 innings with 19 strikeouts and six earned runs allowed. Goodwin will be making his first start since March 20, but has made four long relief appearances since.

SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS
Appalachian State had its modest three-game winning streak snapped with a 4-0 loss to East Tennessee State on Tuesday in Johnson City. It was the seventh time that the Mountaineers have been shutout this season, most in the Sun Belt Conference. App State's pitching staff has kept the team in ballgames. Despite striking out the fewest batters in the league, the Mountaineers have allowed the fewest number of hits as well.
