Troy Downs Appalachian State Behind Thomas’ Star Performance

TROY, Alabama – Levi Thomas tossed eight stellar innings as Troy earned an 8-2 win in the Sun Belt series opener against Appalachian State at Riddle-Pace Field on Thursday.
Thomas (4-2) struck out six batters allowing two runs on four hits to earn the victory. The sophomore didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning, didn't allow a runner to advance past first in seven of his eight innings, and retired the side in five frames.
Troy (20-18, 8-8 SBC) jumped out to an early lead when Appalachian State starter Will Sprinkle was called for a balk with runners on the corners. Sadler Goodwin and Dalton Sinquefield both singled with two outs to set up the score.
In the fifth, the Trojans exploded for five runs highlight by a two-run home run by Chase Smartt and a solo shot from Manning Early. Goodwin drove in the first two runs of the frame on a double down the line in left.
Frederic hit his seventh home run of the year and Troy's third of the game in the fourth, a solo shot to left to give the Trojans a 7-2 advantage.
The Mountaineers (15-20, 7-8) broke through on Thomas in the top half of the fourth scoring on a two-out sacrifice fly by Kendall McGowan and a double from Bailey Welch. Troy capped the scoring in the seventh on a bases loaded wild pitch.
Goodwin led the Trojans at the plate finishing 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and two runs driven in.
Sprinkle (2-6) was saddled with the loss allowing seven runs on 10 hits in 3.1 innings.
