TROY, Ala. – In its last non-conference weekend series of the season, Troy baseball will face off with in-state foe North Alabama in a three-game set at Riddle-Pace Field starting Friday night. Game times are scheduled for 6 p.m. in the opener, 4 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. in Sunday's finale.
Â
Troy (6-6) is looking to get back in the win column after dropping two straight, including a midweek loss to No. 21 Tennessee at the Hoover Met Tuesday night.
Â
Sophomore Levi Thomas (2-0, 2.87) has been outstanding on the mound in his first three starts of the season, racking up 18 strikeouts with just six walks and leading the Trojans to three consecutive Friday night victories to start the year. Junior southpaw Grant Stewart (1-1) will start Saturday's contest after picking up his first win at Troy with five solid innings of two-hit work last weekend. Coach Mark Smartt has yet to announce a starter for the finale.
Â
The Trojan offense ranks in the top 40 nationally in both homers and doubles, while posting the fourth-best batting average in the league at .263. Leading the bats is a group of four .300-plus hitters in Rigsby Mosley, Drew Frederic, Chase Smartt and Sadler Goodwin.
Â
In conjunction with the weekend set, the baseball program will host its annual Alumni Weekend welcoming back all former players, coaches and support staff – specifically honoring the 40-year anniversary of the 1979 team and the 35-year anniversary of the 1984 team. The 1979 squad, legendary coach Chase Riddle's first at Troy, reeled off a 20-game winning streak that still stands as the longest in school history. The '84 club broke the school record (at the time) for wins with 39 en route to a third-place finish at the NCAA Division II College World Series.
Â
SCOUTING THE LIONS
In its first season in Division I, North Alabama (2-9) has gotten off to a rough start dropping its first three series of the season – the Lions were swept by The Citadel last weekend. Davis Elliott paces the offense with 12 hits, three doubles and two homers through 11 games this year.
