Troy Downs Penn in USF Invitational Finale

CLEARWATER, Florida – Troy used a pair of big innings to push past Penn, 8-3, in the Sunday afternoon finale of the USF Invitational. Troy scored four runs in the third and sixth innings to finish the weekend 4-1 with its only loss coming to South Carolina.

"Sundays are always going to be a grind, and I thought our team did a great job of fighting throughout that whole game and winning the late innings," head coach Beth Mullins said. "We just completed a 17 game away stretch and we are excited to get back Home this next week in front of our fans."
Troy (16-6) struck first in the bottom of the third inning claiming a 4-0 lead.

Madelyn Porter doubled to right center to score Allie Miller, who led off with a single, and Talia Truitt who followed Miller with a walk.

A single by Bailey Taylor and a walk by Brooke Echols set Taylor Corbett for a two-run double to right center to cap the first four-run inning.

A three-run home run by Emma Nedley in the top of the fifth put the game within one for the Quakers (2-3), but Troy answered with another four-run inning in the sixth.

Kaylee Hussey led off the frame with her first home run of the season. A single by Truitt and a pair of doubles by Miller and Taylor scored three runs and capped off Troy's victory.

Leanna Johnson (10-1) earned her 10th win of the season after recording five strikeouts and no walks. Kynsley Rae Blasingame closed out the final inning by sitting down the Quakers in order with one strikeout.

Julia Longo (0-2) suffered the loss after allowing four runs off of four hits in her first career start.

Troy is back in action on Wednesday at 6 p.m. as the Trojans host Samford for a midweek matchup.

Notes
- Katie Webb led the Trojans offensively going 10-for-17 with three doubles and six RBIs on the weekend.
- Leanna Johnson came into the weekend leading the nation in strikeouts. The freshman added 19 more strikeouts this weekend and picked up three more wins.
- Troy hit three more home runs with two from Brooke Echols and one by Kaylee Hussey. Echols now has three home runs on the season.
- Allie Miller earned her first start of the season starting all five games. Miller finished the weekend 4-for-11 with a double and two walks.
