Sky’Lynn Holmes Named Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year

TROY, Alabama – Senior forward Sky'Lynn Holmes has been named Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Year, the league announced on Monday. She was also named Second Team All-Sun Belt Conference.
Holmes finished the regular season second in the league averaging 9.4 rebounds per game, fifth with 1.0 blocks per game and seventh with 1.8 steals per game. She hauled in double-digit rebounds in 14 games, including 20 against Louisiana on Jan. 26.
The Mount Pleasant, Texas, native averaged 8.0 points for the Trojans and shot 42.6 percent from the field. Holmes led the conference and was 15thin the country with 4.0 offensive rebounds per game. The team leads the nation averaging 50.4 rebounds per contest.
Holmes led the team with 26 blocks, 48 steals and had posted four double-doubles on the season.
Despite suffering a season-ending injury on Feb. 28 at Texas State, Holmes, a product of Tyler Junior College, will finish her career 10thin Troy's Division I history with 505 total rebounds. Her career 8.9 rebounding average ranks second. Holmes' 261 rebounds last season are fourth-most since the Trojans moved to DI in 1993, her 244 rebound total this season stands seventh.
Troy (22-7, 13-5 SBC) posted the most regular season wins in program history en route to earning the No. 3 seed in this week's Sun Belt Conference Tournament. The Trojans play Thursday at 2 p.m. against an opponent to be determined. Troy is looking to win its third title in four seasons.
