TROY, Ala. โ A three-run home run from Sadler Goodwin and a two-run shot from Dalton Sinquefield were all the offense Troy needed as it defeated Southeastern Louisiana, 5-2, in the series opener Friday night at Riddle-Pace Field. The two teams will wrap up the series with a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. Saturday due to the high possibility of rain on Sunday.
ย
Goodwin has now hit three homers in the past two games opened the scoring for the Trojans (5-4) in the bottom of the fifth. The three runs gave Troy the lead right back after the Lions (2-7) scratched across two in the top of the fifth to break a scoreless tie.
ย
The Troy half of the inning was set up by an infield single from Drew Frederic and a base hit by Rigsby Mosley. Frederic finished the game 2-for-4 and is in the midst of a modest, six-game hitting streak. Mosley led the squad with a three-hit game that included his fifth double of the season.
ย
Newcomer Dalton Sinquefield helped ice the game away with a no-doubter over the porch in right field in the bottom of the eighth after Austin Garofalo set the table with his second hit of the contest. Frederic, Mosley, Goodwin, Garofalo and Sinquefield accounted for all but two of the Trojans' 13 hits in the game.
ย
Offense isn't the only area in which Troy shined, as its defense and pitching were phenomenal in the ballgame, as well. Making just his second career start, Caleb Bartolero threw out two would-be base-stealers and made an above average, diving play on a popped-up bunt attempt.
ย
On the mound, it all started with five strong innings from Levi Thomas (2-0), who scattered five hits around a career-high seven strikeouts and allowed just two runs. Junior Lance Johnson picked up a hold after allowing just two baserunners in three innings on the mound. Closer Cory Gill (3) earned the save by striking out the side in order in the ninth to preserve the victory.

Quotable โ Troy head coach Mark Smartt
"We're getting better. We still have things to improve upon. One thing I've noticed with this team through nine games is we like to compete; we like to get in there and fight. We played nine hard innings tonight and it wasn't easy. I'm looking forward to getting back out here tomorrow to get back after it."
