TROY, Ala. – Troy will meet yet another quality baseball program this weekend on the diamond, as Southeastern Louisiana makes the journey to Riddle-Pace Field for a three-game set scheduled to start at 6 p.m. Friday. First pitches in the final two games are planned to start at 4 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
Â
The Trojans (4-4) are coming off a tough, 7-9 loss to rival Jacksonville State in midweek action Wednesday night and are looking to snap a three-game home skid. Despite falling late to the Gamecocks, Troy effective offensive production from several players, highlighted by a couple of three-hit games from Sadler Goodwin and Reed Smith – the two combined to hit three homers in the contest.
Â
Goodwin leads the club batting at a .412 clip (7-for-17) with two homers and six RBI in just six games – with four starts – in the lineup. The Troy offense currently boasts six players with at least a .300 batting average and is hitting .259 as a team on the season.
Â
Troy will look to RHP Levi Thomas (1-0, 2.53) once again in the opener. Thomas has been effective in his first two Friday night starts this season, fanning 11 batters and issuing just three free passes. LHP Grant Stewart (0-1, 67.50) will be looking for redemption after a rough first start in a Troy uniform at Louisiana Tech last weekend as he earns the start in game two of the season. Head coach Mark Smartt has yet to announce a starter for Sunday's finale.
Â
SCOUTING THE LIONS
One of the more consistent college baseball programs in the country, Southeastern Louisiana (2-6) has made three NCAA Regional appearances and has featured eight All-American selections in head coach Matt Riser's six-year tenure at the helm of the team. The Lions enter this weekend's series after a loss to No. 9 Mississippi State in Starkville Wednesday – they started the season 0-4 against Louisiana Tech and top-ranked LSU.
Â
Brennan Breaud has led Southeastern at the plate with a .355 batting average and Nathan Pilutti ranks fifth nationally with eight stolen bases already this season. The Lions will look to a group of experienced righties for the starts in all three games of the series.
