Goodwin’s Homers Not Enough as Troy Falls Late
2/27/2019 10:51:00 PM | Baseball
Goodwin – who's lone homer of his career was a grand slam against Louisiana in the Sun Belt Tournament last season – hit a two-run blast to cap-off a three-run opening frame for the Trojans (4-4). The senior finished 3-for-5 with three RBI in the contest.
Reed Smith started things off with a bang, tripling on the first pitch he saw to lead off the bottom of the first inning. Drew Frederic drove Smith in on an RBI single and scored on Goodwin's homer two batters later.
The three-run first may have been an omen, as all but one run scored in the game came in a group of three – Troy scored three in the first and three in the sixth, while Jacksonville State (4-5) scored three in the second, three in the fourth and then three in the eighth to seal it. The outlying run came from a Reed Smith homer in the bottom of the eighth – Smith finished 3-for-5 in the contest.
A few batters after Goodwin's second homer led off the sixth, Dalton Sinquefield picked up his first hit in a Troy uniform and made it count, lining a two-RBI double down the left field line to tie the game up at the time.
The Gamecocks had only four hits heading into the eighth inning but had managed six runs as the two rivals were all knotted up. They doubled that total with four hits in the frame and scored three runs – two earned – to effectively seal the game and handed Rush Hixon (1-1) his first loss of the campaign.
JSU reliever Austin Brewster (1-0) recorded the win after fanning three around two hits and allowing one run through 1.2 innings on the mound. Chris Edwards (2) earned his second save of the year with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
Sound "Smartt" With Your Friends
After Wednesday night, Troy has now had players hit two homers in a single game in back-to-back games – Drew Frederic Sunday at Louisiana Tech and Sadler Goodwin against Jax State – marking the first time since at least 2011 that the feat was accomplished.
Notable
• Sadler Goodwin's three-hit night matches a career-high set in consecutive games – he finished 3-for-4 in game one of the doubleheader last Sunday at Louisiana Tech.
• Freshman Tanner Jackson did not reach base in a game for the first time in his young career Wednesday, ending a team-best, seven-game reached base streak.
• Chase Smartt doubled off the scoreboard in the first inning to continue a streak of now three straight games with a double for the senior.
• Troy hit for a "team cycle" in the first inning of the ballgame, Smith tripled, Frederic singled, Goodwin homered and Smartt doubled.
Up Next
Troy's non-conference slate continues with a homestand against Southeastern Louisiana at Riddle-Pace Field Friday through Sunday. First pitches are set for 6 p.m., 4 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
