TROY, Ala. – A strong defensive effort from Troy women's basketball Wednesday night proved to be the difference as they held Auburn University at Montgomery to just 26 percent shooting in a 72-42 victory inside Trojan Arena.
The trend of slow starts and strong second quarters continued for Troy on Wednesday as they had to weather an early barrage of AUM 3-pointers, including two in-a-row from Victoria Morales who ended with just six points, in the first quarter before settling down in the second.
After AUM took an early 8-13 lead, Troy began to settle down behind the stellar play of junior guard Emely Rosario. The junior from the Bronx, N.Y. had her best game of the season with a season-high 15-points on 5-of-9 shooting. Rosario's great game started with about one-minute remaining in the first quarter as she scored five straight points to tie, and then give, the Trojans the lead for what proved to be the remainder of the contest.
With the lead in hand Troy began to find the same defensive intensity that they played with a few days ago at Bethune-Cookman. After giving up 30 points in the first half, Troy held the Warhawks to a season low four points in the third quarter and just eight points in the fourth. The four points allowed in a quarter are the fewest points Troy has allowed in a single quarter since giving up six to UT-Arlington back on March 2, 2019.
Between the third and fourth quarters Troy held AUM scoreless for six minutes, they held Bethune-Cookman scoreless for seven on Sunday. During the full third quarter and the first four minutes of the fourth, Troy was able to extends its lead to 28 points, Troy's largest advantage before extending it to 30 in the final seconds of the game and closing out the contest with a 72-42 win.

Quoting Coach Rigby
On the strong team defense to hold AUM scoreless for half a quarter
"It's the first time since I have been at Troy that I have had a team that could do that. My assistant coaches have really been emphasizing that in practice, defense. They've really done a fantastic job at prioritizing defense and they have come up with some great drills and thinking situations even when we are away from the gym to get us thinking of defense and we are improving and are encouraged by that."
On a different leading scorer for the seventh straight game
"I think it's definitely a nightmare for the other coaches and their scouting reports. I think all of our players have to be on the scouting report. If Emely wasn't on there before she is now. That is a huge advantage for us in other teams' preparation on us."
