TROY, Ala. – The Troy women's basketball team picked up its sixth victory of the season in front of a youthful crowd on Education Day. The Trojans defeated East Tennessee State 79-61 to improve to 6-2 on the year and extend its winning streak inside Trojan Arena to four-games.
For the eighth consecutive game Troy was led by a new leading scorer, this time it was Harriet Winchester. On Wednesday Winchester and Jasmine Robinson each tallied 13-points to pace the Trojans to an 18-point victory over ETSU. Both players did a majority of their damage in the second half as Winchester scored eight in the final two frames while Robinson scored seven.
With a full complement of bodies for the first time this season, Troy played one of its most complete games of the year. The Trojans bucked the trend of starting slow by jumping on ETSU early and scoring 10 straight points in less than two minutes to grab control of the game from the opening tip.
Both Troy's offense and defense were on point for the first 20 minutes of play as Troy held ETSU to just seven first-quarter points while outscoring the Bucs 40-18 in the first half. Out of the break the Trojans got six quick points from Robinson and Winchester to extend their lead to 28, the largest of the game.
A normally strong second half team, Troy struggled late. Following its six points to open the third, Troy was outscored by ETSU 18-9 and their 28-point advantage was cut to just 19. The Bucs continued to chip away at the lead late in the game outscoring Troy in the final frame 23-20. Troy's 28-point lead proved pivotal as ETSU was unable to cut the deficit past 14 points as the Trojans held on for their final victory inside Trojan Arena during the 2019 calendar year.
Records
Troy: 6-2
ETSU: 3-8

On the overall game
"I thought we started the game extremely well. This week was a little rough, we just got finished with finals so a lot of them haven't had a lot of sleep because we've had some tough finals this semester. It's not an excuse because we started the game extremely well. We started on a 10-0 run and did a lot of things right and got a pretty good lead at halftime but the thing we are disappointed with was our response out of halftime. We've got a senior group with basically all upper classmen and for us to come out of the locker room with that same intensity is something we've got to get better at."
On Harriet's great game
"Well it's kind of what Harriet does. She's had the assignment all year of being on the other team's best guard and I thought she did a heck of a job on Micah [Scheetz] even though she was able to score a lot of points. But Harriet does her job. She knows she has to be a defensive presence for us and she was rebounding over our post players tonight just going up there and getting the ball. She wanted it more than everybody else on the floor, we've just got to build off that because Harriet is a heck of a player and she's got more in the tank."
