LAFAYETTE, La. -- The Troy Trojans soccer team struck for two goals in just over five minutes to drop Louisiana Sunday afternoon 2-1 in overtime at the Ragin' Cajuns Soccer and Track Facility.
With the Trojans (12-2-4, 7-1-2 Sun Belt) trailing by goal with just under two minutes remaining, freshman Taytum Terrell fired a bouncing ball that found its way over the goal-line before a Ragin' Cajun (8-7-3, 4-4-2 Sun Belt) defender cleared it off the line.
With the momentum firmly on Troy's side, the Trojans quickly ended the match when Alisa Detlefsen blasted a left-footed shot into the left corner of the net.
Senior Haleigh Mercer allowed just a penalty kick goal, making eight crucial stops to propel the Trojans to victory.
The Trojans conclude the regular season with 12 overall victories and seven Sun Belt Conference wins, which are the most in school history.
Troy returns to action next Wednesday afternoon for the First Round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament against an opponent that will be determined based on the result of the Arkansas State/Little Rock match that got re-scheduled for Tuesday afternoon. Kickoff for the SBC Tournament First Round match is scheduled for 1 p.m. from the Foley Sports Tourism Complex.
NOTABLE:
• Troy is now unbeaten over its last nine matches (8-0-1).
• The 12 overall victories are the second-most in school history. The 2014 team holds the record, having gone 16-6.
• The Trojans finished the month of October with a record of 5-0-1.
• Troy outscored its opponents 41-16 during the regular season and 24-8 in Sun Belt matches.
• The 24 SBC goals were the most in the conference, and Troy's +16 goal differential was also the top-mark in the conference.
• The 41 total goals are the most in a season since 2014, and are the third most in school history. Troy needs just one more goal tie the 2003 Trojans output of 42.
• Troy's 123 total points (41 goals, 41 assists) ties the second highest output in school history (2014). The Trojans need to tally just 17 more points to equal the highest total (140) in program history, which was set in 2001.
• The 41 assists tie the all-time program mark set back in 2014.
• Troy's cumulative save percentage of .857 would be the second-best mark in program history. The Trojan keeper's in 2015 recorded a save percentage of .865.
• Mercer made 16 saves in two matches this weekend, allowing the one PK goal.
• Tonight, was her eighth match with at least five saves and is the fourth consecutive match where she has recorded at least five saves.
• She lowered her goals-against-average to 0.90 and now has made 89 saves this season. The 89 saves lead the Sun Belt.
• Mercer's 0.90 goals-against-average is currently the third lowest in a season in program history.
• Her .848 save percentage is the second highest percentage in the Sun Belt trailing only Heather Martin (.882) of Texas State.
• Detlefsen's goal was her third game-winning goal of the season.
GED TALKS:
"It was a hard-working gritty performance by a determined team. At the end of the day we were very fortunate to come away with the win because at times we were outworked, which is my biggest concern. We became more attacking toward the end of the match as we searched for the equalizer. Then when we tied the match, we rode the momentum into overtime where we scored the game winner on a great strike by AD. We've found some many different ways to win this year which is the sign of a good team. Now it's all about doing what we can do when it counts. But tonight, I'm proud of the way we were able to get two wins on a really tough trip for us We're looking forward to having the next week off as we get ready for the Sun Belt Tournament."
