FOLEY, Ala. – The Troy Trojans women's soccer program saw its season end Wednesday afternoon dropping a stunning 3-0 decision to Louisiana in the First Round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament at the Foley Sports Complex.
Troy ends the season with 12 overall victories, the program's most since 2015. In her final match of her Troy career, senior Maddie Brune had the Trojans best scoring opportunity in the 24th minute when her rising shot clipped the cross-bar and bounced out. The Trojans had another opportunity, but a Kate Lorenz shot went just high.
For the match, Troy (12-3-4) outshot Louisiana (9-7-3) 17-10, but ultimately failed to score a goal for the first time since Sept. 8 against Auburn.
Wednesday afternoon was the last game at Troy for Brune, Nathali DaSilva, Kiersten Edlund, Kate Lorenz, Grace Mirly, Haleigh Mercer, Miranda Schoening and Bri Shackelford.
NOTEABLE:
• The Trojans 41 total goals are the most that a Trojan team has scored since 2014.
• The 41 strikes are tied for the third-most in program history.
• Troy's 12 overall victories are the third-most in program history.
• Troy was shutout for the third time this season
• Mercer concludes the season with 90 total saves.
• Her 13 overall victories are the fifth-most in program history.
• Mercer's 11 victories in 2019 are the third most single-season wins in Troy history.
• Schoening replaced Mercer in the 85th minute. She recorded one save.
• Edlund concludes the season with 12 overall assists which is a new program record.
• Her 18 overall assists are also a program record.
GED TALKS:
"Results like today are a part of this profession. We've got a few players who are less than 100 percent and we conceded the early goal. We got back into it in the middle of the match, which was incredible to see. Our effort was indicative of this group all year because they fought the entire time. We give up a penalty kick and then got caught trying to attack, and they slipped behind the defense for the third goal. I'd rather lose 3-0 than sit back. Our seniors have been nothing but immense this season. Credit Maddie, Brazil [DaSilva], Kiersten, Kate, Grace, Haleigh, Miranda and Bri. This season was phenomenal because of those people. Today, the better team for the entire 90-minutes won the match. Now we need to go home, take a few hours to get over this one and get ready for next season."
On the team heading into 2020:
"Experience is preparing every day. Right now we need to digest how painful an end of the season can be. We'll rest up and get healthy before we attack next year. We need to credit our entire staff. Nicole Waters, Hogan Vivier, Logan Smith and Will Houck for keeping our kids going so long. We'll keep moving forward."
