Men's Tennis Completes Impressive ITA Regional

AUBURN, Ala. – The Troy's men's tennis team concluded play at ITA Southern Regional Championships on Sunday on the campus of Auburn University.
Troy senior Oskar Michalek had arguably the most impressive singles tournament at the ITA Regional regardless of team. Michalek, who started the tournament in the qualifying round, won three matches to advance to the field of 32 main draw that started on Saturday.
Having played three more matches than his first-round opponent, Michalek was in a rhythm and used that to his advantage. The senior began his main draw match against the No. 1 player from Auburn. After losing the first set 6-2, Michalek rebounded to take the final two sets and complete the upset. In the round of 16 Michalek again dropped the opening set but again battled back to stun nationally ranked Hamish Stewart of Tulane in three sets.
In his final match of the event Michalek took No. 25 ranked Tim Sandkaulen of Ole Miss in the quarterfinals. Michalek grabbed the early advantage with a first set victory before eventually falling in the match. Over the course of the tournament Michalek posted a 5-1 record.
Pelayo Antuna began the regional event in the main draw due to his final regional ranking after the spring season. Antuna opened the event with a victory over Alabama's Patrick Kaulovalta before falling in the round of 16 to No. 36 Ewan Moore.

The Trojans concluded their 2019 fall season at the ITA Southern Regional. The Trojans will be back in action on Jan. 17, 2020 when they travel to Montgomery to take on AUM in their season opener at 3 p.m.
