ARLINGTON, Texas – Troy (16-4, 6-2 Sun Belt) picked up its second-ever win over UT Arlington after a 3-1 (25-22, 13-25, 25, 25-23) victory over the Mavericks Saturday night in College Park Center. The Trojans finish with a 5-1 record against Sun Belt West Division teams.
Two Trojans passed impressive career milestones on the road. Amara Anderson reached the 2,000-career assist mark while Cheyenne Hayes became the 11th Trojan in school history to reach 1,000 career kills.
"What's most fun about this is Cheyenne and Amara are both great people and high character young women," head coach Josh Lauer said. "We are fortunate to have them and there is plenty more to come from them in the future."
Anderson registered her 10th double-double of the season with 55 assists and 15 digs. The sophomore added two kills and an ace to her impressive night. Lacey Jeffcoat posted a season-high 25 digs from the back row while adding two kills and two aces to her stellar performance.
"Lacey was fantastic tonight," Lauer said. "She kept us in a lot of rallies and made everyone around her better."
Three Trojans reached double-digit kills on the night. Hayes led the way offensively with 19 kills while Julia Brooks added 13 and Ashley Guenveur posted 10. Halston Hillier had a solid outing with eight kills and two blocks while Avery Cason provided a spark off the bench with six kills on .455 hitting.
"Avery's contribution off the bench was terrific," Lauer said. "She has been working really hard every week to be ready and help the team in whatever way possible and tonight she made some big time plays at clutch times."
Set One
UT Arlington grabbed an early three-point lead at 4-7, but a kill from Brooks brought the Trojans back within one. The Mavericks kept Troy at an arm's length through most of the set and held a four-point advantage at 16-20. The Trojans kicked it into gear, however, going on a 9-2 run to close the set. Back-to-back kills from Guenveur and Brooks clinched the opening set for Troy, 25-22.
Set Two
The Mavericks would respond in the second set, however, controlling the set from start to finish. UT Arlington jumped out to a quick 10-4 lead to force an early Trojan timeout. The Maverick offense would keep rolling through the timeout, pushing the UT Arlington lead to 16-6 and later 20-8. Cason was a late bright spot with two kills, but the Trojans couldn't close the gap, dropping the set, 25-13.
Set Three
Troy was the team to get out to a fast start this time, racing out to a quick 10-4 lead over the Mavericks. A Guenveur kill pushed the lead to 12-5 before UT Arlington would narrow the gap to 15-11. It was all Troy from that point on as the Trojans pushed their lead to 21-13 after a kill from Cason. Anderson ended the set with a kill to make the score 25-16 in favor of the Trojans.
Set Four
The Trojans fell into an early four-point hole but soon climbed out of it to tie the set at 9-9. UT Arlington inched back ahead at 10-13, but Hayes answered with a kill after a Troy timeout. Things were back-and-forth heading into the second half of the set as the teams were tied at 18-18, 20-20, 21-21 and 22-22. Troy would end the match on a 3-1 run capped by a Brooks kill to clinch the set, 25-23.
