TROY, Ala. – Troy picked up its ninth sweep of the year in front of the largest home crowd of the season, defeating Georgia State 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-17) Friday evening in Trojan Arena. The win marks Troy's 12th straight home victory dating back to last season, tied for the ninth-longest streak in the nation.
The Trojans (17-4, 7-2 Sun Belt) held Georgia State to .035 hitting, the second lowest by an opponent this season. Lacey Jeffcoat had an impressive defensive night, registering 15 digs in the win.
Cheyenne Hayes moved to ninth all-time on Troy's career kills list, finishing with 13 kills to bring her career total to 1,023. Ashley Guenveur and Halston Hillier each posted solid outings with nine kills apiece while Amara Anderson once again finished with over 11.00 assists per set, recording 34 assists in three sets of action.
"I thought our team came out with good energy and really fed off a great crowd tonight," head coach Josh Lauer said. "All in all, it was another good, resilient win. I thought we kept our composure when the game got a little chaotic. We did a good job of stabilizing ourselves and played with some good habits."
Set One
Troy opened the night with a 5-1 run to begin the first set and extended its lead to five at 8-3. Georgia State rebounded, however, taking the lead at 10-11 to force a Troy timeout. The remainder of the set was tight before Troy pulled ahead 22-19 to force a second Panther timeout. Guenveur hammered home the final kill to clinch the set, 25-21.
Set Two
The Trojan defense stepped up in set two, holding the Panthers to -.054 hitting. Georgia State opened the set on a 3-0 run before Troy took a 6-3 lead. Troy pushed its lead to 16-11, then 18-12 to pull away from the Panthers. The Trojans would take a 2-0 lead after a 25-18 victory in set two. Hayes and Caitlin Cooper each had four kills in the middle stanza.
Set Three
Troy kept its foot on the gas pedal throughout the third set, taking its largest lead of the night at 20-11. The Trojans cruised to a 25-17 set three win to secure the sweep over the Panthers. Hillier had the hot hand in set three, recording five of her nine kills in the final set. Troy's defense was stifling yet again, limiting Georgia State to .073 hitting to close the night.
