Troy Men's Tennis Tops West Alabama in Season Opener

The Trojans successfully opened 2019 season with a win against West Alabama Tigers, 5-2. It is the first team win under the new head coach Rolando Vargas.
The Trojans had a confident start in doubles, where senior Jiaqi Duan and sophomore Pelayo Antuna defeated their opponents in a fast manner, 6-2. Freshman Luis Foix and sophomore Jorge Poyatos clinched a tough win against Julius Kaverinen and Linus Holthey, 7-6(7-3). Oskar Michalek and Manuel Bernard played together for the first time and fell short in a close match against Henrik Sinkko and Ilari Vesanen, 5-7.
With a 2-1 lead after doubles play Jiaqi Duan added one more point for the team score after defeating Ilari Vesanen in two sets, 6-3, 6-3. Pelayo Antuna and Oskar Michalek clinched singles wins at No.1 and No.2 spots respectively. Manuel Bernard made his debut as a freshman by defeating Ilia Dehodiuk from Ukraine in a three set match, 2-6, 6-4,7-5. Christopher Tasker was defeated by Erik Nordblom, 6-4, 2-6, 2-6. At No.6 spot Jorge Poyatos was very close to defeat Noah Johansen from West Alabama, but fell short in a third set 8-10.
