TROY, Alabama – Troy head football coach Chip Lindsey announced the addition of John Carr to his staff on Thursday to coach on the offensive side of the football; Lindsey will announce staff positions at a later date.
Â
"John has been successful at every level he's coached, and we're excited to have him and his family at Troy," Lindsey said. "He brings a wealth of knowledge and has experience as a head coach and coordinator. John is a teacher at his core and can instantly connect with those around him in a positive way."
Â
Carr joins the Troy staff following one season at ULM where he was the receivers coach and recruiting coordinator. A long-time high school coach in the state of Louisiana, Carr has more than 20 years of coaching experience at the high school, junior college and collegiate levels.
Â
"My family and I are humbled to become part of the Troy Family," Carr said. "I want to thank Coach Lindsey for the opportunity to join this staff as we look to build on the strong foundation that is Troy Football. Coach Lindsey has a great vision to strengthen Troy's grip as one of the premier programs in the Group of Five, and I cannot wait to work towards that goal."
Â
A successful high school coach in Monroe, Louisiana, Carr returned to the city in 2018 to coach at ULM. The Warhawks were one of the top passing teams in the Sun Belt with Carr's receivers averaging 247.5 yards per game; the second most in the league. Additionally, ULM posted a 6-6 overall record and 4-4 Sun Belt mark; both the best finishes for ULM since 2013.
Â
Receiver Marcus Green earned first team All-Sun Belt honors after ranking second in the league in touchdowns and yards per catch. Green was a finalist for the Paul Hornung Award and finished with four scoring plays of 69 yards or more, the second most in the country.
Â
Prior to returning to Monroe, Carr served as the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator at Jones County Junior College for two seasons and helped lead the Bobcats to a combined record of 14-5. In addition to his play-calling responsibilities, he also coached the quarterbacks, wide receivers and tight ends.
Â
In 2017, Jones County went 8-2 overall, including a 6-1 record in conference play, while ranking among the NJCAA national leaders in scoring offense (seventh at 41.4 points per game), rushing offense (eighth at 261.8 yards per game) and total offense (12th at 453.2 ypg). The Bobcats scored 50 or more points in three games, including 61 at Southwest Mississippi. Carr coached two All-MACJC South selections, in wide receiver Kendall Parham (first team) and tight end Chancie Tidwell (second team).
Â
In 2016, Jones County finished among the national leaders in rushing offense (seventh at 238.6 ypg), total offense (18th at 392.8 ypg) and scoring offense (27th at 30.4 ppg).
Â
Carr previously worked for three years as the director of football operations for Todd Monken at Southern Miss (2013-15) – Lindsey served as Southern Miss' offensive coordinator during the final two years of Carr's tenure with the Golden Eagles.
Â
From 2005-12, Carr served as head coach at Ouachita Parish (La.) High School where he compiled a 72-28 record in eight seasons. In his first year, he led the Lions to the Class 4A semifinals. His teams advanced to the state quarterfinals on three occasions (2006: Class 4A, 2008: Class 5A and 2012: Class 5A). During his tenure, more than 30 of his student-athletes signed scholarship offers with collegiate programs.
Â
Prior to becoming head coach at Ouachita Parish, Carr spent the 2004 season as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for his father, Roger, at East Mississippi Community College.Â
Â
Carr gained experience as an assistant coach at four Monroe area high schools, including Neville, Ouachita, West Monroe and West Ouachita.

The Ruston, Louisiana, native was a three-year letterman (1993-95) as a wide receiver at Louisiana Tech. He earned his bachelor's degree in health and physical education from Louisiana Tech in 1996 and master's degree in administration and supervision from ULM in 2001.
Â
His father, who was inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in 2012, was a two-time All-America wide receiver at Louisiana Tech (1972-73) and spent 10 years in the National Football League (Baltimore Colts, 1974-81; Seattle Seahawks, 1982; San Diego Chargers, 1983).Â
