Troy Outlasts Georgia Southern in Slugfest

STATESBORO, Georgia – Troy held off a hot-shooting Georgia Southern team, 97-81, on Thursday in Hanner Fieldhouse to win its eighth straight game.
The Eagles' Alexis Brown scored a career-high 34 points and tied a school record with eight 3-pointers, but it would not be enough as the Trojans (14-2, 5-0 SBC) are off to the best start in program history.
Georgia Southern (5-11, 0-5) knocked down 10-of-13 shots from 3-point range in the first half, while Troy struggled missing its first eight from range. Harriet Winchester jump-started the Trojan offense with a pair of threes sandwiched around a Shaterrika O'Neal jumper as Troy opened the second quarter on a 10-2 run.
Despite the Eagles impressive start, 10 Trojans scored in the first half allowing for a 50-47 lead.
Winchester knocked down a couple more triples in the third quarter and finished with career-best 21 points on 5-of-10 shooting from 3-point range.
Kayla Robinson opened the fourth quarter 4-of-4 scoring the first eight points of the frame as Troy eclipsed the 80-point plateau for the 100thtime under head coach Chanda Rigby (204 games).
Troy once again dominated the boards outrebounding Georgia Southern 54-28 and scored 29 fast break points.
For the game Georgia Southern shot 46.9 percent (30-64) from the field and was 12-of-20 from 3-point range, but just 2-of-7 in the second half. Troy converted at a 46.2 percent clip (36-78) and was 16-of-22 from the free throw line.
Kayla Robinson finished the game with 15 points, her fifth straight game in double figures. Sky'Lynn Holmes collected her fourth double-double of the season and ninth of her career with 12 points and 11 rebounds to go along with five assists.
Tatum Barber had 20 points and Amira Atwater added 12 for the Eagles.
