ARDMORE, Okla. – Paced by a pair in the top six, the Troy women's golf team opened its 2018-19 season with a third-place finish at the Lady Maxwell as play concluded Sunday at Dornick Hills.
Freshman Nicole Lorup led Troy with a third-place finish with a 3-over 216 over her first 54 collegiate holes; she finished just two shots off the pace. Lorup finished third in the field with 10 birdies over the three rounds and was third with a 4.12 average on the par-4 holes.
"Nicole had a great weekend," head coach Randy Keck said. "To come out a shoot a 69 in your first collegiate round, not many players get to say that. She hit so many good iron shots which gave her a lot of short birdie putts; she hit the ball directly at the flag and a lot of them looked like they had a chance to go in."
Troy finished with a 54-hole total of 887 which would have been its second-best three round score last season, while Lorup's 216 would have been the best score by a Trojan golfer last year.
"I feel better than what I did on Thursday," Keck said. "I knew we were going to be pretty good, but I feel like we have a potential to be better. The three seniors picked up where they left off last year and our younger players really played well."
Senior Bianca Lohbauer took home a sixth-place finish with a 7-over 220 on the par-71 golf course as she carded eight birdies over the weekend. Lindsey Harrison turned in Troy's best round of the final day with a 1-over 72 on Sunday pushing her to 12th on the leaderboard.
Playing as an individual, Judith Castro Roldan placed 11th with a 10-over 223 while Sarah Harrison tied for 18th at 16-over and Jordan Susce finished in a tie for 36th place.
UTSA took home the team title by eight shots over Sam Houston State with Troy three shots back in third.
The Trojans have a three-week break before they return to the course at the Golfweek Challenge at Red Sky Ranch in Vail, Colo.
