TROY, Ala. – Troy Athletics and Troy University will honor our military heroes on Sept. 29 surrounding Troy's football game against Coastal Carolina on Military Appreciation Day at Veterans Memorial Stadium; kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
Â
The highlight of the day will come at halftime with the Walk of Heroes as all active, retired and reserve members of the armed forces will be welcomed to field to walk with their fellow service men and women. The ceremony will begin with a special recognition for all Vietnam Veterans.
Â
Retired Command Sgt. Maj. Bennie G. Adkins, a Troy alumnus and Medal of Honor recipient, will sign his book "A Tiger Among Us" at the Barnes & Noble Bookstore in the Trojan Center beginning at 11 a.m. An action-filled memoir, "A Tiger Among Us" is filled with the sights, smells, and sounds of a raging battle fought in the middle of a tropical forest. "A Tiger Among Us" is a riveting tale of bravery, valor, skill, resilience and perhaps just plain luck.
Â
Prior to kickoff, an American flag will cover the entire playing field of The Vet for the national anthem and a C-130 Hercules from the 908th Airlift Wing at Maxwell Air Force base will perform a flyover of the stadium. On Tuesday, Sept. 25, at 1:30 p.m., the C-130 will officially be dedicated as "Trojan Warrior Spirit" in a special ceremony at the Troy Municipal Airport as a Troy themed nose art will be revealed on the aircraft.
Â
Additionally, active soldiers in full uniform will lead the Trojans into The Vet during Trojan Walk, which will take place at 12:15 p.m. in Tailgate Terrace. Once inside the stadium, the Trojans will wear helmets featuring patriotic themed Power T decals, and retired Troy University Senior Vice Chancellor Colonel John W. Schmidt will perform an enlistment ceremony prior to the game. Also, Troy Sports Properties will provide 1,000 miniature American flags prior to the game.
Â
Fans can help contribute to the military experience by purchasing an $8 Community Hero Ticket which will be donated to active, retired and reserved military personnel and their families. Community Hero Tickets can be purchased online at TroyTrojans.com/tickets, by calling 877-878-WINS (9467) or in person at Trojan Arena.
