TROY, Alabama – The meet that Troy outdoor track and field's sights have been set on for nearly a year is finally here; the Trojans are headed to San Marcos, Texas, for the 2018 Sun Belt Track and Field Championships.
Â
A season full of record-setting individual performances will culminate at the conference championships Friday through Sunday at the Bobcat Track and Field Stadium.
Â
Jaevyn Wortham and Indiya Summerville are strong contenders in the throwing events, while Precious Ogba and Madison Kennedy will pace the Trojan women on the track. Carrying in the most momentum is Riley Schwietz who will compete in an array of events.
Â
For the men, Connor Brookman is aiming to make a return trip to the NCAA East Regional with a strong showing at the championships. Thrower Michael Alvernaz, who earned Sun Belt Athlete of the week during the indoor season, is also in good position to bring home points for the Trojans.
Â
Meanwhile, the freshman duo of Jared Hayes and Amir Harris are looking to continue their breakout success this year in the 400-meter dash. Finally, Troy's 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relay teams will wrap up the competition with races on Sunday afternoon.
Â
Notable
• Riley Schwietz has arguably the most momentum of any Trojan, winning her first collegiate event and breaking the school record in the heptathlon in consecutive weekends.
Â
• Five returning Trojans have NCAA postseason experience entering this year. Junior Hakim Montgomery has earned a trip in each of his first two seasons.
Â
• Troy indoor track and field placed fifth at the conference championships in February, tying for the highest finish in program history – finished fifth twice before.
