Outdoor Heads to Historic Penn Relays

TROY, Alabama – Troy outdoor track and field is set to compete at one of the most prestigious events in the country, the Penn Relays in Philadelphia this weekend.

The Trojans are sending 29 student-athletes to the meet that has run annually every year since 1895 making it the oldest and largest track and field competition in the United States. There are several different levels of competition at the Relays, from high school to college to the U.S. track and field team.

Some athletes to watch on the women's side are Jaevyn Wortham, Riley Schwietz and Indiya Summerville, as well as the three women's relay teams – 4x100m, 4x400m and sprint medley. Wortham is the second-seed in the discus throw, Schwietz is competing in three different events and Summerville will compete in the shot put.

Leading the men are: Michael Alvernaz in the hammer, Connor Brookman in the javelin and Jordan Poole in the shot put. The men's 4x100m, 4x400m, distance medley and sprint medley relay teams will also be in contention for a top finish.

• Riley Schwietz has been on fire as of late, winning her first collegiate event two weekends ago and breaking the school record in the heptathlon last weekend.

• Five returning Trojans have NCAA postseason experience entering this year. Junior Hakim Montgomery has earned a trip in each of his first two seasons.

• Troy indoor track and field placed fifth at the conference championships in February, tying for the highest finish in program history – finished fifth twice before.

• No days off. The Trojans will compete in at least one meet each weekend from March 16 until the Sun Belt Outdoor Championships in San Marcos, Texas, May 11-13.
