ARLINGTON, Texas- Mother nature won on Saturday as Troy (28-20, 12-10) could not get a complete game in, but the Trojans fought through the adversity to start two and finish all three games of the series on Sunday. Troy fell in the first two games of the series, both walk offs, but came out on top in game three.
Â
Game one: Troy 4, UTA 5
A three-run home run from junior Stephanie Snyder and an RBI-double from Katie Webb highlighted game one on Saturday before the action was halted due to severe weather in the area.
Â
UTA struck first, scoring a run in the bottom of the first as Sandra Mendoza led off with a hit by pitch and worked her way around the bases, scoring on a sacrifice fly.
Â
The action resumed on Sunday morning as a three-run sixth inning allowed the Mavs back into the game, tying the game on a wild pitch and a two-run shot over center field.
Â
Troy went to its sixth extra-inning game of the season as the score stayed even at 4-4 until a walk-off solo home run from the Mavericks in the bottom of the 11th inning handed UTA the first win of the series.
Â
Taylor Corbett, Snyder and Webb all had impressive outings at the plate, each tallying three hits. Calhoun added two more, while Hussey posted one as Troy out-hit the Mavericks 12-6. The top four hitters in the lineup continued to get one base and scored all four runs in the game for Troy.
Â
Annie Willis continued to shine in the circle, throwing a complete game, but unfortunately took the loss.
Â
Game Two: Troy 2, UTA 5
Troy suffered another heartbreaking walk-off loss in game two as the Trojans held on to a 2-1 lead late, but a double and a few walks in the bottom of the seventh loaded the bases as Brittany Wyllie walked off with a grand slam, her first career home run, giving the Mavericks a 5-2 win and the series win.
Â
Both teams plated a run in the first. Calhoun led off with a double, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Porter and crossed the plate on an RBI groundout from Webb.
Â
The second run of the game came across for Troy in the fourth as Corbett doubled into left field and scored on a single from Kaylee Hussey. The Trojans recorded three doubles in the game, adding to its conference-leading total at 68.
Â
The Troy defense kept the Mavericks at bay for five innings, but a walk-off grand slam ended Troy's opportunity to even the series.
Â
Troy's seven hits in the game were spread across the lineup from seven different players. Hope Hernandez, Porter and Bailey Taylor were the only batters to not record a hit.
Â
Junior Peyton Glover made the start in game two, throwing a complete game. With the loss, Glover moves to 9-6 on the year.
Â
Game three: Troy 8, UTA 7
Â
Kaylee Hussey sparked the Trojan offense with a grand slam, the first of her career and her sixth home run of the season, in the top of the third inning as Troy escaped with a narrow 8-7 win in game three. A few hit by pitches and walks brought in the first run before Hussey worked her magic to plate the next four.
Â
Erica Davis added her fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot as Troy took a 7-0 lead.
Â
UTA cut into Troy's lead with a three-run home run from Reagan Wright in the bottom of the sixth, the Mavericks' first runs of the game. The Mavericks continued to rally, plating four runs in the seventh, three of which came once again on a three-run home run from Wright.
Â
Troy's final run of the day came across on a wild pitch and the Mavericks snuck back into the game off of six RBI from Wright. However, the Trojan defense worked through the rough patch to come out on top for its 28th win of the season.
Â
Despite finishing the 11 inning game this morning, Willis returned to the circle and pitched five innings, only allowing three runs on six hits. Kynsley Rae Blasingame came in as relief in the bottom of the sixth. Willis earned the win to improve to 15-6.Â
