NEW ORLEANS- For the first time in Troy women's tennis history, the Trojans have earned the number one seed in the Sun Belt Conference tournament in Peachtree City, Ga., the league announced Tuesday. The tournament will begin on Thursday, April 19 and will conclude with the championship match on Sunday, April 22.
As the one-seed, Troy earns a first round bye, and will face the winner of No. 8 Louisiana and No. 9 Georgia Southern in the quarterfinals on Friday, April 20 at 8 a.m. Troy has not faced either of those two teams this season.
Troy finished the regular season 8-10 overall, and completed conference play at 4-2 defeating Georgia State, UTA, Appalachian State and Coastal Carolina. The Trojans look to use the momentum from a five-match win streak to make a run for the Sun Belt title. The semifinal and championship matches will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
"I am very proud of the girls' performances finishing the regular season and entering the Sun Belt Tournament as the one-seed for the first time in program history," head coach Rawia Elsisi said. "We have been playing a tough schedule all year to get us prepared for a high level of competition and championship matches. There are a lot of good teams in our conference this year and anything can happen during the tournament."
Senior Efriliya Herlina has led the efforts this season for the Trojans, posting a 20-12 overall record, and going an undefeated 4-0 in conference play. Freshmen Pei Ju Hsieh and Matea Mihaljvic have each picked up a team-high nine wins in dual-match play.
