3/31/2018 7:09:00 PM | Softball
ATLANTA- Georgia State (18-16, 4-7) outlasted Troy (19-16, 5-7 SBC) in game one of the day, as both defenses battled back and forth, until a walk off home run from Ivie Drake in the 12th inning lifted the Panthers over Troy, 3-2. Another big game from Drake powered the Panthers over Troy in the final game of the series 6-3.
Â
Game one: Georgia State 3, Troy 2
Nine of Troy's 10 batters posted a hit with Talia Truitt and Logan Calhoun paving the way with three hits a piece, but a walk off home run by senior Drake in the bottom of the 12th inning gave the Panthers the win.
Â
The game was gridlocked at 2-2 after the sixth inning. Troy plated its first run of the game with a lead-off single from Brook Echols and an RBI double from Hope Hernandez. After three scoreless innings, Kaylee Hussey gave the Trojans their second run of the game with a solo home run to left center field.
Â
Troy defense kept Georgia State quiet until the Panthers tied the game with a two-run sixth inning with a walk and three back-to-back singles. For the next five innings, both teams were making contact and getting on base, but both defenses held strong as neither team could get a run across. A lead-off solo shot from the Panthers ended Troy's efforts to take game two and the series win.
Â
After throwing a complete game on Friday, Willis returned to the circle and threw six full innings allowing five hits and striking out three. Junior Peyton Glover entered in the bottom of the seventh and only allowed one run and struck out six, but unfortunately took the loss to move to 6-4 on the year.
Â
Game two: Georgia State 6, Troy 3
Georgia State used the momentum from game one, scoring all six of its runs in the first two innings of game two.
Â
Drake continued to be unstoppable at the plate, leading off the game with a home run, just minutes after launching one to end the first game.
Â
A bases-loaded walk gave the Panthers the 2-0 lead, before Drake struck again, this time a grand slam, handing the Trojans a six-run deficit before Glover came in to relief Claire Graves and got Troy out of the inning.
Â
A lead-off single from senior Caril Kayler and a Georgia State error allowed the Trojans to get a run on the board. Troy held the Panthers for the remainder of the game and rallied in the top of the seventh scoring two runs as Kayler blasted her first home run of the season and Madeline Porter drove in a run with an RBI single. The rally came up short as Georgia State earned the series win.
