Troy Takes Game One from Georgia State
3/30/2018 7:25:00 PM | Softball
ATLANTA- Back-to-back two-run innings late in the game lifted the Trojans (19-14, 5-5 SBC) over the Panthers (16-15, 2-7 SBC) 4-1 on Friday afternoon at the Robert E. Heck Softball Complex.
Â
Georgia State senior Ivie Drake plated the first run of the game with an early solo home run in the first inning, but the sixth-ranked Trojan defense kept the Panthers at bay for the remainder of the game.
Â
Troy struggled to get the bats going through the first four innings, only having three base runners, all walked batters.
Â
Kaylee Hussey ended the drought for the Trojans with a single into left field with one out in the top of the fifth, and Hope Hernandez followed with a hard hit double into centerfield to put two runners in scoring position. With two outs, Taylor Corbett got her first of two hits, scoring Hussey and Hernandez as Troy took a 2-1 lead.
Â
The Trojans plated two more in the sixth as Katie Webb led off the inning taking her base on balls and Kyndal Riddick entered the game to run. A double from Madeline Porter and a single from Bailey Taylor allowed Riddick to step across the plate. Troy's final run of the game came on a sacrifice fly from Brooke Echols, scoring Porter from third.
Â
Annie Willis had another dynamite outing in the circle, giving up five hits, but only allowing one run. The freshman threw her seventh complete game of the season and fanned six batters. Willis leads the Troy pitching staff with 1.65 ERA.
Â
NOTEWORTHY
"I am really proud of our girls today," head coach Beth Mullins said. "I thought we had really good pitching, defense and timely hitting. When you have all three you give yourself a really good chance of winning the ball game."
Â
UP NEXT
Troy will wrap up the series with a doubleheader tomorrow at 12 and 2 p.m., CT before hosting Florida A&M on Wednesday in the non-conference doubleheader.
