SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Wesley Person has been selected to compete in the inaugural 3X3U National Championship, which pits 128 former Division I players against each other in a 3-on-3 tournament for a chance at a $100k prize pool.
Each Division I conference will be represented by a team of four players who have recently exhausted their collegiate eligibility. The games will begin Friday at 6 p.m. with each game being broadcast live on either Twitter or ESPN2.
"We're really happy for Wes to get selected to participate in such an exciting event," head coach Phil Cunningham said. "With only four players from each conference being selected, it will make for a terrific end to his collegiate career."
The inaugural Sun Belt squad will consist of Person, Sam McDaniel of ULM and Jaylen Shaw and Demario Beck both of Coastal Carolina. Shaw was the Chanticleers leading scorer at 14.8 points per game while Beck led the team with 7.2 rebounds per game. McDaniel was tops on the Warhawks with 76 3-pointers and was second on the team with 15.2 points per game.
All of the games will be held at Bill Greehey Arena at St. Mary's University with the pool play round to start the tournament on Friday. Games will be played for 10 minutes or until a team reaches 21 points.
One point will be awarded for each basket inside the arc while a 3-pointer will count for two points. A 12-second shot clock will be implemented with each team coaching themselves in the tournament.
Every win in pool play will result in a $1,000 prize for the victors. Wins in the quarterfinals and semifinals will also net the winners $1,000 while a championship win will earn $50,000.
There will be 24 games broadcast on Friday on Twitter from 6 p.m. to midnight (CT) and then 24 more pool play games on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. (CT). The semifinals and championship will be live on ESPN2 beginning at 1 p.m. (CT) on Sunday.
Person capped off his four-year career at Troy in record setting fashion as this season alone he broke the Troy scoring record, the Sun Belt record for most career 3-pointers and became the first Trojan ever with 2,000 points.
The Brantley, Ala. native set career highs in both points (551) and points per game (17.8) his senior season and was named All-Sun Belt Third Team, which made him just the sixth player in Sun Belt history to be named all-conference four times.
