Varnado Named To NABC All-District Team

TROY, Ala. – The National Association of Basketball Coaches announced that Jordon Varnado was named 2017-18 NABC Division I All-District as voted on by the member coaches of the NABC.
Â
"We are extremely proud of Jordon's recognition as a member of the NABC All-District Team for the second-straight year," head coach Phil Cunningham said. "I thought Jordon had the potential to be on the first team as he showed adversity by pushing through an injury that cost him more than a month of the season.
Â
"Despite the setback, Jordon still finished with a career-high in scoring and remained a consistent-scoring threat by shooting so well from the field (42.8 percent). I believe his already great numbers could have been even better if not for the unfortunate injury he sustained."
Â
Varnado was selected to the second team of District 24 to make his second appearance on the NABC team, which selects the "finest basketball players across America." Since 1927, the NABC has recognized athletes who have brought positive attention to the sport of basketball and been a role model in the community.
Â
It was another successful season for the Brownsville, Tenn. native as he set a career-high with 17.9 points per game, which was good for sixth in the Sun Belt en route to being named All-Sun Belt Second Team.
Â
With 7.0 rebound per game, Varnado joined Kevin Hervey of UT Arlington as the only two players to rank in the top-10 in the league in both scoring and rebounding. It was the second-straight season in which Varnado accomplished that feat.
Â
The junior was the third-most accurate shooter in the Sun Belt as he hit 48.2 percent of his field goals while playing 30.6 minutes per game. Despite missing seven games with a foot fracture, Varnado still managed to have 36 blocks and average 1.4 blocks per game.
Â
In the final month of the year, the forward was at his strongest as he scored 22 or more in six of his final nine games with three double-doubles in that span and three games of 10 made field goals.
Â
Troy knocked off South Alabama in the first round of the Sun Belt Tournament for the program's fifth-straight win in the tournament before falling to eventual Sun Belt Champion Georgia State in the quarterfinals.
