Trojans Fall to UNF in Hard Fought Match

TROY, Ala. – Troy (0-6) won the early doubles point and fought hard in singles, but could not quite overcome UNF as the Ospreys defeated the Trojans 5-2 on Sunday at the Lunsford Tennis Complex.

Troy dominated on the doubles courts sweeping the Ospreys. Jiayuan Xue and Efriliyah Herlina finished first with an impressive 6-1 win over Kinga Gartner and Eva Nyikos. Seniors Sanae Ohta and Nancy Karaky followed with a 6-4 win over their opponents, clinching the doubles point for Troy. Freshmen Pei Ju Hsieh and Maria Casas Blas wrapped the doubles competition for the Trojans with a 6-3 victory.

Matches were closer in singles play, than the score sheet shows. Troy battled on all five courts, taking two of the matches into three sets. Ohta, Karaky and MAtea Mihaljavic all fell in two sets, but Troy still had a chance to pull away with the win.

After falling in the first set, Xue rallied to get the lone singles win for the Trojans, defeating Valentina Mariotto 1-6, 6-4, 7-5.

Eva Nyikos of UNF took an early 7-5 set one lead on court two against Herlina, but Herlina bounced back to even up the match winning set two 7-5. It all came down to the third set that the Osprey narrowly won, 6-4.

All eyes turned to court six, as Hsieh took Florencia Rossi to three sets. Hsieh jumped out to an early lead as she won set one 6-4. Rossi applied the pressure, ultimately winning the second set tiebreaker 7-6, and winning the third set 7-5
