11/29/2018 10:43:00 PM | Basketball (M)
Troy, Ala. – Sophomore Javan Johnson made a put-back dunk with three seconds remaining to force overtime but Austin Peay outlasted Troy in the extra period, handing the Trojans a tough 79-74 loss in non-conference basketball action on Thursday night.Â
Â
Troy (3-4) held the Governors (3-4) quiet in the first half from the field, keeping Austin Peay at 29 percent (9-of-31), but the Trojans went cold from behind the arc in the final 25 minutes going 1-of-10.Â
Â
With 55 seconds remaining in the overtime period, sophomore Darian Adams grabbed a steal which set up freshman Spencer Rodgers for a three-pointer at the top of the key that gave Troy a 74-73 lead. On the ensuing possession as the shot clock was near zero, Zach Glotta converted a deep three-pointer that would give Austin Peay the lead for good.Â
Â
Senior Jordon Varnado and sophomore Javan Johnson poured in a team-high 14 points each. Johnson added six rebounds and an assist to his stat line while Varnado grabbed three rebounds, three assists, one block and a steal. Senior Alex Hicks posted a double double in 12 points and 12 boards.Â
Â
QUOTING COACH CUNNINGHAMÂ
"It was a hard-fought game and we knew that it would be. We respect how hard Austin Peay played and how physical they were. We just struggled to make three's; it is hard to win a game when you go 4-of-26 from the three-point line. Give our guys credit for fighting and scrapping and never giving up."
Â
QUICK HITS
- Four Trojans scored in double figures for the third consecutive game (Varnado 14, Johnson 14, Hicks 12, Adams 11)
