Troy Rolls in First Day of Gridiron Classic

MACON, Georgia – The Troy women's tennis team rolled in the first day of the Mercer Gridiron Classic winning all six singles matches as well as five of its six doubles events.
All five Trojans advanced to the quarterfinals of their respective flights with freshmen Chunxi Guo and Celia Montero Estevan along with sophomore Maria Casas Blas taking matches in straight sets.
After falling behind in both matchups, Matea Mihaljevic rallied to win the final two sets against Urska Velec of Alabama State (6-2, 6-2) and against Kennesaw State's Lara Mehlsam (6-0, 6-4). Tingting Pei split the first two sets with Florida Southern's Lola Asis (6-3, 5-7) before taking the deciding set, 6-3, to advance.
Celia Montero Estevan, Chunxi Guo and Maria Casas Blas all advanced on straight-set victories.
In doubles action, Guo and Pei took down Man and Ericson of Charleston Southern. Casas Blas and Estevan defeated Kennesaw State's Reilly and Phillips, while Mihaljevic was paired with Chloe Kabamba of Morgan State and fell to East Tennessee's duo of Guemes and Pascual-Larrinaga before bouncing back to beat Reilly and Phillips of Kennesaw State.
Action continues Saturday at 7:30 a.m. (CT).
