Tennis Set for Mercer Gridiron Classic

TROY, Alabama – The Troy men's and women's tennis teams are to set to travel to Macon, Ga., for the Mercer Gridiron Classic; the three-day event open on Friday and concludes Sunday.

Over 170 players will compete in the event coming from 15 different colleges. The tournament will have three singles draws (A, B, C) and two doubles draws (A, B). Singles action will kick off the tournament beginning Friday morning at 8:30 a.m. followed by doubles play.

Troy, Jacksonville State, Georgia Southern, Kennesaw State and Alabama State are sending both men's and women's teams to Macon for the three-day tournament.

Georgia State, Florida Southern, North Georgia, Coastal Carolina, USC-Upstate and North Florida will also be competing on the men's side. Florida Southern College, Middle Georgia State, ETSU and Charleston Southern will join the field on the women's side.

Last season, head coach Rawia Elsisi was named Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year after leading the Troy women's side to its first-ever No. 1 seed berth in the Sun Belt Tournament. The Trojans return three players from last year's squad – Maria Casas Blas, Pei Ju Hsieh and Matea Mihaljevic – while welcoming three freshmen – Celia Montero Estevan, Chunxo Guo and Tingting Pei.

First-year men's head coach Rolando Vargas will take six players including two freshmen – Trey Whittaker and Luis Foix. A duo of sophomores Ignacio Rodriguez and Jorge Poyatos, plus junior Shaaz Peerani and senior Jiaqi Duan will see action as well.
