Tuscaloosa, Ala. – The Troy men's tennis team finished competition in the singles and doubles bracket Saturday on the third day of ITA Regionals.
Jiaqi Duan and Pelayo Antuna were very close to win the game and advance into the next round of doubles bracket.
Sophomore Pelayo Antuna squared off against No. 3 seed Brandon Laubser from Auburn in the singles last round of qualifying bracket and dropped a tight 7-5, 7-5 match. In doubles, the duo of Jiaqi Duan and Antuna fell short against Tulane's Akos Kotorman and Ewan Moore, 8-6.
The Trojans will be back in action on Oct. 26, when they travel to Chattanooga, Tenn., to play in Steve Baras Invitational.
Quotable - Troy Head Coach Rolando Vargas
On singles…
Pelayo Antuna was playing smart and was able to close down the points when it mattered the most. Jiaqi Duan had a very tough first round, and I am happy that, he was able to step up in the right time against his opponent from Southern Miss. He has an all-around game and he was able to use that to his advantage. In the next rounds, we did not do well in the position of a front-runner in the game. Once you let a top player bounce back in the match anything can happen. So, we need to keep working hard.
On doubles…
It is very quick, and you have to start very strong. We had a 6-4 lead with 40-30 on the scoreboard, but we did not execute correctly at the right moment. It changed the momentum of the game. That is why Tulane took advantage of that in the end, and their experience helped them a lot."
On overall impression...
I was pleased with the performance. Overall, it was good to see the guys compete. It is always exciting to play regionals, especially in the South region. We have some of the best teams in the nation with many high-ranked players. I am excited what we can do in the spring, but we have to step up to stay competitive and do what we have to do.
Singles & Doubles Results (Day 2 & 3)
No. 3 Brandon Laubser (Auburn) def. Pelayo Antuna (Troy)7-5, 7-5
Kotorman/Moore (Tulane) def. Duan/Antuna (Troy) 8-6
