STATESBORO, Georgia- Four members of the Troy women's tennis team traveled to Georgia Southern to compete in their first tournament of the 2017 fall season.
Senior Jiayuan Xue got things off to a solid start with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 win over University of Tennessee-Chattanooga's Delaney Edwards in the Blue flight. Xue moves on to the quarterfinals where she will face Damira Muminovic of Georgia State tomorrow at 10:15 a.m.
Freshman Maria Casas Blas also competed in the Blue flight, but fell to Caroline Hall of UTC 6-2, 6-2. Casas Blas will continue to play in the consolation racket tomorrow against Ilona Golynker of Georgia State.
In the White flight, senior Efriliya Herlina defeated Shakendra Alston of Savannah State 6-2, 6-0, while newcomer Matea Mihaljevic earned a bye and will make her first appearance as a Trojan tomorrow at 10:15 a.m., against an opponent from UTC.
On the doubles courts, Casas Blas and Mihaljevic fell in a tight 7-6 match to a pair from UTC. Xue and Herlina dominated a duo from Savannah State 6-1 and earned another win over a duo from Georgia Southern. They will face another UTC team tomorrow at 9 a.m. looking for a win to earn a spot in the championship.
