Troy-South Alabama Face Off Sunday

TROY, Alabama – The Troy soccer team opens a four-game home stand against rival South Alabama at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the Troy Soccer Complex.

After a 1-2 road swing, the Trojans (4-7-2, 2-2 Sun Belt) still find themselves just three points from the top of the Sun Belt standings with six regular season games to play. South Alabama (5-4-1, 3-0) has won all three of its conference games by a single goal including a 2-1 decision over Georgia State in the team's last outing.

Troy and South Alabama spilt the series last season. The Trojans took the regular season meeting, 1-0, before falling to the Jaguars by the same score in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.

The eighth-seeded Troy women's soccer team fell to No. 1 South Alabama, 1-0, in the opening round of the Sun Belt Conference Championships on Wednesday. The Trojans finish the season with a 7-10-3 record.

South Alabama's Ashlynn Jones scored the game's only goal in the 80th minute when Troy's backline misplayed a pass. Jones intercepted the ball, streaked towards goal, beat the keeper one-on-one and passed it into the back of the net. The Trojans outshot USA 12-10 in the game but were unable to convert on their chances.

South Alabama is unbeaten in its last six games (5-0-1) after starting the season 0-4. The team's unbeaten streak and win streak (3) is the longest in the Sun Belt. The Jaguars are 3-0 in Sun Belt play for the third time in school history. All three occurrences have happened in the last three years. The program has been 4-0 just once, in 2015.
Rio and Steffi Hardy each scored a goal Sunday vs. Georgia State. It marked the fifth time in their career, and second since 2014, that they recorded a goal in the same game. Rio currently leads the team with four goals and nine points. She ranks tied for fourth and fifth in goals per game and points per game in the Sun Belt in those categories, respectively.
